Largo is Pinellas County's third-largest city, and a large share of its housing stock dates to the postwar suburban boom of the 1950s and '60s — meaning a lot of Largo homes predate modern Florida Building Code wind and plumbing standards, which shows up as more frequent aging-pipe and roof-related water damage than in newer Tampa Bay suburbs. Largo also has more natural lakes within its city limits than most of the region, including Taylor Lake and the area around Lake Seminole, and the combination of a high water table with older, flatter drainage infrastructure means saturated ground can take longer to recover after Tampa's heaviest rain events.
Because Largo sits inland from the Gulf beaches but still within Pinellas County's narrow, low-lying peninsula, it sees less direct storm surge than beachfront communities but more of the everyday flash flooding and slow-draining yard flooding that comes with older stormwater systems built for a smaller, less-paved city than exists today.
We respond to Largo water damage calls — flash flooding, aging-pipe leaks, and storm-related roof damage — with the same fast, documented process we use throughout Tampa Bay.
A large share of Largo's postwar housing stock was plumbed with materials standard for the 1950s and '60s — galvanized steel and early copper — that have now been in the ground or in walls for six or seven decades, well past the service life either material was originally expected to provide, which is part of why aging-pipe failures show up more often in Largo than in areas with a younger housing stock. The city's dense concentration of natural lakes, including Taylor Lake and the Lake Seminole area, sits alongside an older stormwater system engineered for a much less paved, less developed Largo than exists today, so heavy rain has fewer places to go before backing up into streets and yards near those lower-lying lake basins. Largo's inland position within Pinellas County's narrow peninsula means it's buffered from direct Gulf surge in a way beachfront cities aren't, but that same narrow, low-lying geography still leaves limited natural elevation to fall back on when a heavy rain event outpaces the drainage system.
